AC/DC

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

..December 2008 New York..

Soon after arriving home from a long trip in Japan. Fortunate to cover the AC/DC tour for Mix Magazine. One of the biggest bands I’ve worked with.

Loud, loudest….A stage full of Marshall amps, double decked across the back of the stage and hanging from the top of the arena. The loudest wall of sound imaginable. The sounds thumped in my ears. The ear plugs did nothing. When I walked outside the venue and took my ear plugs out, the sound was still deafening. I can’t imagine how loud it was for the crowd without ear plugs. A big arena rock band. Pyro-techniques and a huge locomotive train on stage with smoke.

One of my favorite assignments! Much better than the previous assignment covering Janet Jackson.

Marilyn Manson

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

..November 2004.. ..Roseland Ballroom, New York..

Marilyn Manson, one of the last tours I covered for Outburn Magazine.

Some of the photos remind me of when I photographed Perry Farrell 7 years before.

Was one of the best tours I covered. It felt exciting for me again. Like when I first started shooting tours. When I’m photographing a big performer like Marilyn Manson, the camera seems to move faster.

Was surprised to see how young the crowd was. During the 4th song of the set, the power went out on the mic and amps for about 5 seconds, while they were playing a Depeche Mode cover. Odd thing was no one seemed to notice as the crowd just continued to sway violently back and forth without interruption.

Isis

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

..December 2007 New York..

Another brief assignment from Rock Sound (UK). Shot Isis at the Irving Plaza. No barrier between the crowd and the stage. Shot it while be crunched into the front of the stage. Got about 20 frames of film off before I called it a night.

Controlled Bleeding Album Cover

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

..September 2002 New York..

The first album cover I shot for a band called Controlled Bleeding. It’s still my favorite album cover I’ve done. Working with Paul Lemos of Controlled Bleeding has gone well over the years. I’ve shot 5 album covers for them.

I first started working with him when I was hired by Outburn Magazine to do a portrait. It was my first commissioned shot for Outburn back in 1999. I shot a lot of assignments for Outburn until 2006.

Paul has always been open to ideas and using the images as is on the album covers. Not much text or manipulation of the photos. It’s always been photo, Controlled Bleeding, and album title. We’ve always come up with a clear vision of how the artwork matches his music. I’ve never been disappointed with the product.

I shot this photo years before. Right after graduating college. Shot somewhere along the Potomac River. When Paul saw the photo it was the one he wanted.
